The development required an architectural response that extended beyond the individual buildings. A key consideration was the relationship between the various commercial uses and the movement of customers, vehicles, pedestrians and service traffic throughout the precinct.
Integrated development
The Sasol filling station forms an important anchor within the development, supported by a broader retail component and dedicated vehicle dealership. Each element has been positioned to maintain its own operational requirements and visibility while contributing to a cohesive overall development.
Particular attention was given to commercial frontage, accessibility, parking and circulation, ensuring that customers can move intuitively between the different components of the site.
Traffic and circulation planning
Given the scale and mixed-use nature of the development, traffic engineering formed an integral part of the design process. Working in collaboration with traffic engineers, the site planning considered vehicle movement, access and egress, internal circulation, parking requirements and the interaction between filling-station traffic and customers accessing the retail and automotive components. The objective was to create a development that remains efficient, legible and safe, even during periods of increased activity.
Structural coordination
Structural engineers were incorporated into the multidisciplinary design process to address the structural requirements of the development and its various building typologies. Close coordination between the architectural and engineering disciplines allowed the design intent to be developed alongside considerations of structural performance, constructability and safety.
Retail and automotive experience
The vehicle dealership introduces a distinctive automotive component to the development, with prominent display areas providing visibility while integrating naturally with the broader commercial environment. Retail spaces are positioned to benefit from the activity generated by the filling station and surrounding development, creating opportunities for convenient shopping while maintaining clearly defined pedestrian and vehicular zones.
Landscaping and architectural lighting further contribute to the character of the precinct, helping transform a predominantly vehicle-orientated environment into a welcoming contemporary commercial destination.
A cohesive commercial precinct
The result is a large-scale development where architecture, engineering and commercial planning work together. Rather than functioning as isolated components, the filling station, shops and vehicle dealership form part of a connected precinct designed around accessibility, visibility and efficient movement.
